As long as human beings have existed we have had a connection to the spiritual, whether in the worship of the land, or the worship of gods in various forms. Part of this connection has always encompassed precious stones and crystals. Early talismans have been found carved from the bones of animals dating back 50,000 years.
The first written record of crystals came from the ancient Sumerians who used crystals in magic and rituals. In ancient Egypt they were known to use turquoise, emeralds, and quartz in their jewellery, as well as malachite in the renowned eye shadow techniques that the Egyptians made famous.
Around the 17th Century, crystals first became used in healing. Physicians started to discuss their use in terms of good and bad angels that had different relationships to the stones. The good were said to favour the stone’s wearers, whereas the bad were said to encourage the wearers to worship the stones as gods. From here into the 19th century, experiments were conducted that suggested individuals with powers of foresight could gain extra insight from using crystals – some experiencing them in terms of taste and smell.
In modern times, they are still part of the rich healing and spiritual tradition, but their reputation has been diminished, and they’ve become seen as “hocus pocus” since the new age healers of the 1970s and 80s. But their influence remains – in the south west, the moonstone is still worn traditionally at weddings to promote fertility, and some Native American tribes believe certain precious stones are sacred – turquoise especially being thought to have healing properties.
At Bluestreak, we continue in the tradition of celebrating crystals for their beauty, and we're fascinated by precious stones and crystals. If you’re interested in the beauty of the stones, then our Fancy Stone range by Swarovski® feature beautiful semi-precious stones that are sure to turn heads – but we are also proud to sell those ancient stones like malachite, quartz and moonstone in different forms, from beads to pendant jewellery making kits.
