How to Measure Your Area
Not sure how to work out your area? It's easier than you might think. Measure your project, choose the closest shape in the calculator, and enter your figures. Here's how each shape works:
โ Square or rectangle
Measure the length and the width, and the calculator multiplies the two. Ideal for panels, cuffs, straps, and most flat areas.
โ Circle
Measure straight across the widest point (the diameter). Perfect for tumbler lids, badges, and round motifs.
โ Triangle
Measure the length of the base and the height to the point. Useful for V-shaped necklines, godets, and pointed designs.
โ Awkward shapes

How many crystals do I need to cover an area?
It depends on the size of the area and the size of the crystals. As a rough guide, the number of crystals needed is the total area divided by the size of one crystal squared. The smaller the crystal, the more you'll need to fill the same space. Our calculator above works it out for you across every size from SS3 to SS48, so just enter your area and read off the quantity.
How many rhinestones do I need for shoes, a tumbler, or a dress?
The best way to find out is to measure the area you want to cover and enter it into the calculator above. Choose the shape closest to your item, a rectangle for straps and panels, a circle for tumblers, or a triangle for pointed sections, and add the measurements together for larger or awkward shapes. The calculator then shows exactly how many crystals you'll need in each size.
What size crystal should I use?
It comes down to the look you want and the area you're covering. Smaller sizes such as SS3 to SS10 are ideal for fine detail, nail art, and curved or delicate areas. Mid sizes like SS12 to SS20 are the most popular all-rounders for garments and accessories. Larger sizes from SS24 upwards make a bold statement and cover more ground with fewer stones. Many designs mix several sizes for depth and sparkle.
How many crystals are in a wholesale pack?
Wholesale pack sizes vary by crystal size. Most smaller sizes, from SS3 up to SS24, come in factory packs of 1,440 stones. Larger sizes are packed in smaller quantities: SS30 in packs of 288, SS34 and SS40 in packs of 144, and SS48 in packs of 96. The calculator above shows how many packs you'll need for your project alongside the crystal count.
Does the calculator allow for gaps between crystals?
The calculator assumes crystals are applied in straight rows rather than interlaced, giving you a close estimate for a standard layout. In practice, spacing, curves, and wastage can affect the final number, so we always recommend ordering a few extra crystals to be safe. It's better to have a small surplus than to run short partway through a project.
