How to make a crystal Christmas bow

Step 1: Gather your supplies

Tip your flatbacks into the sorting trays, keeping each size separate so they are easy to reach. Make sure the tip of your wax picker is sharp, which makes lifting each crystal easier, then load your E6000 glue into the syringe.

Step 2: Map out your design

Before gluing, plan your placement. Start with the largest crystals down the centre of the bow, then work out how the smaller sizes will fan towards the outer edges. Mapping this first keeps the finish smooth and even rather than wonky.

Step 3: Glue and place the crystals

Apply the E6000 glue a small section at a time, using just enough to hold each stone, as too much looks messy. Set the largest SS16 crystals in the centre first, then graduate down through SS12, SS9 and SS5 as you move towards the edges, lifting each one into place with the wax picker.

Step 4: Inspect and adjust

Once your crystals are down, check your work and reposition any that need it before the glue sets. It is far easier to nudge a stone now than once the glue has dried.

Step 5: Leave to cure

Leave the bow to cure for at least 12 hours so the bond is fully set before you hang or handle it.

Frequently asked questions

How do you make a crystal Christmas bow?

Take a plain bow shape and glue flatback crystals across it with a strong adhesive. Map the design first, set the largest crystals down the centre, then fan out to smaller sizes towards the edges so the bow tapers neatly and catches the light from every angle.

What can I use as the bow base?

A plain bow blank works best, such as an acrylic, resin or wooden bow, or a stiff fabric or ribbon bow that holds its shape. You need a firm surface for the glue to grip, so very floppy ribbon is harder to crystal cleanly.

What glue works best for a crystal bow?

A flexible, industrial-strength adhesive like E6000. It bonds to acrylic, resin, wood and most ribbon, and stays put once cured. Make sure the surface is clean and dry, and apply sparingly so glue does not squeeze up around the crystals.

How many crystals do I need for a Christmas bow?

It depends on the bow's size. This design uses roughly 200 flatbacks across SS16, SS12, SS9 and SS5, graduating from large in the centre to small at the edges. Use our Crystal Calculator to estimate by area before you buy.

Should I use hotfix or non-hotfix crystals?

Non-hotfix, glue-set flatbacks. Hotfix crystals need heat to activate their backing, which you should not apply to an acrylic, resin or ribbon bow, so glue-set non-hotfix crystals are the safe choice.

Which crystals and colours should I use?

Siam red gives a classic Christmas look, but emerald, gold or clear crystal all work beautifully too. We used premium Swarovski here; you can also use our own Austrian-made Serinity, Czech-made Preciosa or budget Estella, in any festive shades you like.

Make it your own

Experiment with different sizes, shapes and colours, from emerald and gold to icy clear, for a bow that suits your tree. For more festive crystal craft, see our crystal snowflake and Christmas bauble projects, or explore the full Craft Studio.
