How to embellish a prom dress with crystals

Step 1: Create your design

Before you start, map out where your crystals will go. You can lay the stones directly onto the dress to try arrangements, or design a template on a tool like Canva. Planning first is the key to a balanced, professional-looking finish.

Step 2: Prepare your crystals and tools

Tip your crystals into small dishes so they are easy to pick up, keeping each shape and size separate, then thread your beading needle ready to sew.

Step 3: Begin sewing

With your crystal in its spot, bring the needle up from the inside of the dress, through the hole in the crystal, then back down to the inside. Tie off the back of each crystal before moving on, and repeat for every stone. Tying off as you go keeps the inside neat and stops the thread tangling.

Step 4: Final touches

Once your main design is sewn, stand back and add any extra crystals wherever you feel the dress needs a little more sparkle.

Frequently asked questions

How do you embellish a prom dress with crystals?

Plan your design first, then sew on each crystal through its hole with a beading needle and thread, tying off the back of every stone as you go. Sew-on crystals stitch securely to the fabric, so they hold up to wear and movement far better than glue on a garment you will dance in.

How do you sew on crystals?

Bring the needle up from the inside of the fabric, through the hole in the crystal, then back down to the inside. Pull snug, then tie off on the back before moving to the next stone. Multi-hole shapes like pear and navette are stitched through each hole so they sit flat and secure.

Why tie off every crystal separately?

Tying off each crystal as you go keeps the stitching on the inside neat and stops it tangling, and it means one stone coming loose will not unravel the rest. It takes a little longer, but it gives a much more durable, professional result on a special-occasion dress.

What thread and needle should I use?

A strong, fine beading thread like Nymo with a size 12 beading needle. The thread is durable and resists fraying, and the slim needle passes easily through the crystal holes and most dress fabrics without leaving visible marks.

What is the difference between sew-on and flatback crystals?

Sew-on crystals have holes and are stitched to the fabric, giving the most secure, washable hold for clothing. Flatback crystals are glued or heat-set. For a prom dress that moves and may be worn again, sew-on crystals are the longest-lasting choice.

Can I change the colours and shapes?

Yes. Mix shapes like lochrose, pear, flower and navette, and choose any colours to suit your dress. We used Czech-made Preciosa sew-on crystals; you can also use premium Swarovski, our own Austrian-made Serinity, or budget Estella, and swap in beads or pearls too.

Make it your own

Try the same technique with different colours, shapes, beads or pearls to suit your style. For more eventwear sparkle, see our crystal clutch bag and bedazzled top projects, or explore the full Craft Studio.
