How to rhinestone a prosecco bottle

Step 1: Set up your workspace

Work on a large, flat, well lit surface where the bottle can later stand undisturbed overnight. Tip the crystals into the Magic Sorting Tray and give it a gentle shake so they settle foil side down, ready to pick, keeping the two sizes in separate sections of the tray.

Step 2: Plan your design

Decide on the design before any glue comes out. We traced the outline of the existing label and added a small flourish above it, which suits the gently curving shoulder of most prosecco bottles. Dry-lay a few crystals to test the spacing, and remember the larger SS16 stones carry the main lines while the SS12 stones fill tight curves and detail.

Step 3: Clean the bottle

Wipe the bottle down so the glass is completely free of grease, fingerprints and loose fibres, then let it dry fully. A clean surface is what gives the glue its grip, so do not skip this even on a new bottle.

Step 4: Load the glue syringe

Fill the syringe from the E6000 Plus tube by placing the syringe tip inside the tube nozzle, then gently squeezing the tube while pulling back the plunger. This transfers the glue with minimal mess and air exposure. Hold the syringe vertically, let any trapped air float to the top and push the plunger slowly until only glue remains, then attach the needle tip.

Step 5: Apply glue in small sections

Squeeze a thin line of glue along the first section of your design and let it sit for 5 to 10 minutes until tacky. A thin layer is essential on a curved bottle, as too much glue runs in unwanted directions. Working in small sections also means you never touch wet glue while turning the bottle.

Step 6: Place the crystals

Use the wax picker pen to lift each crystal and press it gently into the tacky glue, following your design line. Keep the crystals close together with as few gaps as possible, switching between the two sizes to keep the line flowing smoothly around curves.

Top tip: E6000 Plus has a work time of roughly 20 minutes, so only lay down as much glue as you can cover with crystals in that window.

Step 7: Let it cure

Tidy any stray glue with isopropyl alcohol on a cotton bud, then stand the bottle upright and leave it overnight. The glue reaches full strength over the following days, so handle it gently at first. You'll find the picker pen, sorting tray and glue alongside everything else in our tools and accessories collection.

Step 8: Display your centrepiece

Stand the finished bottle where the light catches it: as a New Year's table centrepiece, a housewarming gift or the star of a celebration hamper. The crystals pick up candlelight and fairy lights beautifully, which is exactly what makes this such a popular party project.

Why Swarovski crystals for a centrepiece

For a bottle that is going to sit in the middle of the table, Swarovski's precision cut facets and colour consistency earn their place: Light Topaz against dark glass gives a warm golden sparkle that photographs beautifully. As an Swarovski Authorised Distribution Partner, Bluestreak Crystals supplies the complete genuine range direct from Austria, now available to everyone with no minimum order.

Frequently asked questions

What glue should I use for rhinestones on a glass bottle?

E6000 Plus is the best glue for rhinestones on glass bottles. It dries clear, grips smooth non porous surfaces strongly and stays workable for around 20 minutes, so you can place crystals section by section before it sets. Applied with a fine syringe tip, it also keeps the glue line neat around a design outline.

How many rhinestones do I need to decorate a prosecco bottle?

Around 200 crystals in two sizes is enough to outline the label and add a flourish on a standard prosecco bottle, which is the design used in this tutorial. For fuller coverage, our Crystal Calculator will estimate the quantity from the surface area you plan to cover, and mixing two or three sizes always fills space more efficiently than a single size.

How long does the glue take to dry on a rhinestone bottle?

E6000 Plus is touch dry within a few hours but needs a full overnight cure before the bottle is handled, and up to 72 hours to reach maximum strength. Leave the bottle standing upright and undisturbed while it cures so the crystals cannot slide on the curved surface.

Can you chill a rhinestone embellished prosecco bottle?

Yes. Once the glue has fully cured it is water resistant, so a spell in the fridge or a brief sit in an ice bucket is fine. Avoid leaving the bottle soaking in ice water for long periods, and pat it dry gently with a soft cloth rather than rubbing across the crystals.

Make it your own

Swap Light Topaz for a colour that matches the occasion, spell out a name or date along the label line, or extend the design over the whole shoulder for full coverage.
