Instructions
Step 1
Create your shoulder pad base
If you don't have a shoulder pad base readily available, you can create one by using foam, cotton batting, or any other suitable material, in our case we used black felt as it will be going onto a black blazer. Measure and cut the desired shape and size for your shoulder pad, ensuring it will comfortably fit onto the shoulder of your garment.
Step 2
Prepare your thread
To guarantee a strong and long-lasting piece of embroidery it’s best to condition your thread before you begin. Do this by running the thread through the waxy substance of the Bead Buddy several times before you start. That waxy coating will guard against fraying and the risk of decay over time. You will even find the thread is easier to work with because it’s less likely to tangle.
Step 3
Adding the Preciosa crystals
Using your selected Preciosa Crystals and rhinestones that complement your chosen outfit. Layout your design on the shoulder pad, experimenting with placement until you achieve your desired look. Once you're satisfied, individually secure each crystal or rhinestone with hand stitches or fabric glue for added security.
Step 4
Add the cupchain fringe
Starting with the outside corners of the shoulder pad as your guide, cut a section of cupchain that drapes down to the length you want it to as you hold either end up to the pad. Then repeat this process four more times, each time cut the cupchain 10 crystals shorter than the previous section. Then using needle and thread attach the ends in evenly spaces positions along the straight edge of the pad.
Step 5
Finishing touches
Carefully examine your completed shoulder pad, ensuring all crystals and chains are securely attached. Make any necessary adjustments or reinforcements to prevent accidental loss. Trim any excess threads with a pair of scissors while being mindful not to disturb the overall design.
Step 6
Hand sewing the shoulder onto your clothes
Thread your needle once again with a suitable thread colour and tie a knot at the end. Position the Pad onto your desired clothing item, ensuring it aligns aesthetically. Starting from the backside of the fabric, insert the needle through the fabric and the patch, coming up towards the top. Sew the patch to the garment using small and even stitches, ensuring the pad is securely attached on all sides. Repeat the stitching process, working your way around the entire pad for maximum durability.
