What are Swarovski crystals made of?
Swarovski crystals are made from a glass composition of quartz sand, soda and potash, combined with proprietary additives and melted at high temperature before being precision cut and polished. They contain no lead. The brilliance comes from the clarity of the glass, the accuracy of the cut, and the reflective layers applied afterwards, rather than from any single rare ingredient.
The glass itself
The base material is silica, in the form of quartz sand. On its own, silica needs extremely high temperatures to melt, so soda is added to bring the melting point down and potash is added to improve the hardness and clarity of the finished glass.
What separates crystal glass of this grade from window or bottle glass is purity and consistency. Trace iron in ordinary sand gives glass a faint green cast, visible when you look through the edge of a pane. Removing those impurities is what allows a clear crystal to read as genuinely colourless, and it is the reason batch-to-batch consistency matters so much to anyone matching stones across a large piece of work.

The proprietary part of the recipe is the specific blend of additives. Swarovski has never published it, and any supplier claiming to know the exact formulation is guessing.
Lead, and the 2012 change
Historically, crystal glass of this type contained lead oxide, usually lead tetroxide. Lead raises the refractive index, which increases the way light bends as it passes through the stone, and it also softens the glass slightly so it cuts and polishes more cleanly. That is why lead crystal became the standard for decorative glass in the first place.
Swarovski modified its manufacturing process in 2012 and the range has been lead-free since. The current material is fully REACH compliant, REACH being the European Union regulation governing chemical safety in consumer products, which means the crystals are safe for jewellery worn against the skin, for tooth gems, and for children's costume work.
This is the single most common question we are asked about composition, so to be direct about it: a genuine Swarovski crystal bought today contains no lead.
Foiling: the layer you never see
Turn a flatback crystal over and the underside is not clear glass. It carries a thin metallic backing, applied after cutting, which reflects light back up through the stone instead of letting it pass out of the base.
Foiling is the reason a flatback set against dark fabric still sparkles rather than going dull. It is also the part of the stone most vulnerable to damage, which is why harsh solvents and prolonged soaking degrade a crystal long before the glass itself is affected.

Coatings and effects
Beyond the base glass, most of the colour range comes from what is applied to the surface.
Some colours are in the glass itself, melted in as part of the batch. Others are surface coatings applied after cutting, vacuum-deposited as extremely thin metallic layers. Crystal AB, short for Aurora Borealis, is the best known: a coating that splits light into a shifting rainbow across the surface of an otherwise clear stone. Effects such as Golden Shadow and Vitrail Medium work the same way, with different metals producing different casts.

Because these are surface layers, they can be applied to one face only. A flatback might be coated on the top and foiled underneath, which is why the same colour name can look noticeably different on a sew-on stone, a bead and a flatback.
The cut
Composition sets the ceiling on how brilliant a crystal can be. The cut decides how much of that potential is realised.
Facets are cut and polished to tight tolerances, and their angles determine whether light entering the top of the stone is reflected back out to the viewer or lost through the sides. More facets, cut accurately, generally means more return paths for light and a livelier stone. Swarovski's flatback range uses several cutting styles, including the 2088 and 2058 profiles, each with a different facet arrangement.

Precision matters more than facet count on its own. A stone with many facets cut inconsistently will scatter light unpredictably, while a simpler cut held to a tight tolerance will read as cleaner and brighter. This is the part of the process that is hardest to replicate and where the difference between crystal grades is most visible in finished work.
Where are Swarovski crystals made?
Swarovski crystals are made in Wattens, Austria, where Daniel Swarovski founded the company in 1895 after developing a machine that could cut crystal glass with a precision hand-cutting could not match. Production has remained there ever since, and genuine Swarovski components sold today still come from Wattens.

Origin matters because it is tied to process control. Consistent composition, consistent cutting tolerances and consistent coating chemistry are what allow a stone bought this year to match one bought three years ago, which is the whole point when you are repairing a costume or extending a design.

Are Swarovski crystals glass or crystal?

In geology, a crystal is a solid with an ordered, repeating atomic structure. Glass has no such structure, so in that strict sense Swarovski crystals are glass. In the decorative arts, "crystal" has long described high-quality cut glass made to a particular standard of clarity and finish. That is the sense in which the word is used here, and it has been used that way for centuries.
So a Swarovski crystal is glass, and calling it crystal is also accurate. What it is not is a mined gemstone, quartz point, or diamond.
