What Are Serinity Stones?

Serinity Stones are high quality crystals that are faceted on both sides for extra depth and complexity and are often featured in stunning items of jewellery where the stones are set into metal casings called jewellery settings. There are many different types of setting, however they usually have a concave space for a single stone to sit in and then delicate metal prongs that can be pressed down over the sides of the stone that then hold it in place. This method of application allows for the shaped back of the crystals and the style of the cut determines what kind of pointed back stone they are:

  • Fancy Stones are uniquely designed shaped crystals that usually have an obvious front and back side of the stone. These crystals are usually foiled unless the product description states otherwise, and the silhouette of the stones determines the type of metal setting that will be required. Fancy stones are measures by ‘length x width’ in mm because they come in a variety of different shapes.
  • Chaton or Pointed Back Round Stones are always round when viewed from the front and the facets on the back taper to a single central point. When viewed from the side a classic 1088 chaton looks like the ‘Superman’ logo. Because chatons are always round, they follow a similar system to flatback round crystals using Stone Sizes, this is reflected as “SS” numbers such as SS12 or SS20. Chatons also come in PP numbers for their smaller stones; “PP” stands for “Pearl Plate” which is a method of sizing originally used for pearls by placing them on a surface or plate with holes. The pearls were sized by which holes they fell through, and this method is now also used for categorising the tiniest of crystals.
