With Valentine’s Day fast approaching, many of us are now pondering that age old question; “What’s the best gift?” Gift giving is one of the key love languages after all, and the cliches are red roses with a heart shaped box of chocolates and a card, but why is this?
History of Valentines Day
Historically the days association with ‘love’ specifically, can be traced back to Geoffrey Chaucer, (he wrote Canterbury Tales) where in 1382 it is believed he wrote first poem on the subject. By the 1700’s this idea of poetry being the official language of Valentine’s Day, became intertwined with the giving of beautifully presented valentines’ cards, that would contain said poetry.
Red roses symbolize ‘passionate love’ and the addition of a single white rose to the bouquet, adds just enough purity, to transform it into ‘true love’. From this symbolism, red became the colour of the day, especially when combined with the iconic heart shape that has been used to represent infatuation since ancient times.
These tokens of affection are all meaningful because, in their original forms they required effort; the poem should be original, and the flowers handpicked… Extra points if you recite the poem while they stand on a balcony, and someone plays a lute nearby… However, in this increasingly mass produced and digitized age ‘effort’ has become ‘price’ and the gift has become something that could be given to anyone, even emailed.
This is a trend that we at Bluestreak Crystal would like to challenge, the beauty is in the effort and the attention to stunning detail. Yes, give them a gift, but take the time to make it uniquely for them. Customize that piece of jewellery with their favorite combination of crystal colours, that proves you pay attention to their preferences. Yes, buy them a standard item, but then give time to decorating it, embellish with dazzling Serinity flatback crystals so that the object becomes as wonderfully unique as they are.
