The Queens Platinum Jubilee made headlines across the world for many reasons and we at Bluestreak Crystals adored the news coverage on the jewellery the Queen and her relations wore at various points across the bank holiday weekend. The famous Crown Jewels even received their own BBC documentary that covered the history and significance of the precious stones kept stored away in the Tower of London.
Among her extensive range of royal bling, the Queen can always be seen wearing a statement Brooch on her left shoulder and complimentary necklace. When you also look at the rise in nostalgia fuelled, internet fashion trends such as Cottage-core, Dark Academia and the Vintage Fashion movements, we at Bluestreak Crystals suspect a future trend…
Gen Z is gleefully breaking every fashion rule and accessories that may have been considered old fashioned by millennials are now the vogue. Harry Styles wore a pearl necklace on the CBeebies Bedtime Story segment, and his fans loved him for it.
With all this in mind, we believe the humble brooch is due a massive come back. The bigger the better, often with an animal theme and covered in crystals (and even feathers!) in order to elevate even the most minimalist of outfits.
Combine that with the rise of small businesses on the likes of Etsy, Instagram and TikTok Shop the interest in intricately embellished, hand crafted items that can easily be sent in the post has never been higher. Brooches are turning up everywhere!
The brooch’s rise in popularity is likely linked with how easy it can be to create; all you need is a pin or badge style fastening on the back and the rest is up to you. It can be made from Preciosa Bicone beads, round beads or pearls sewn onto a layer of felt, fancy stones in settings outlined with a crystal Cup chain, soldered onto a metal backing or Preciosa flatback crystals glued into any small flat surface.
We at Bluestreak Crystals have made a few brooches ourselves over the past few months in our Creative Studio and we have thoroughly enjoyed crafting these wearable works of art. If you are a fan of jewellery making you are likely already familiar with this satisfying craft project. If you are typically a crystal embellisher you will be gratified at how quickly you can fill the surface area with either hotfix or non-hotfix crystals. Stitchers and sewers can find great joy from building up texture with clusters of pendants and dazzling sew on crystals.
If you have been curious about trying it, we believe now is the time to make yourself that perfect Brooch.
