Gluing crystals onto trainers is as popular as it is notoriously tricky to do… If you don't know the vitally important, yet startlingly simple, tips and tricks that guarantee the strongest possible bond between the surface of the trainer and the crystals. Crack those secrets and it's easy!
Follow this simple ‘how to’ guide and whether it’s onto leather, pleather or rubber, your rhinestone embellishment will be a success! You can also watch us embellish our own pair of NIKE AIRMAX trainers on Youtube:
Follow these 10 simple steps:
Thoroughly clean the section of the trainer that you wish to embellish and make sure it is also completely dry.
Lightly sand or buff the surface to remove any shine, you are hoping for a dull and slightly scratched texture for the glue to stick to. Be careful to not damage any of the seams because that will affect the longevity of the trainer and those fluffy threads will make the embellishment more difficult to do.
Apply your glue, for hard wearing objects we recommend the 2 part CG500 Resin Glue, mixed in a 50/50 ratio. If you change the ratio it will affect the drying time and we advise mixing it with something disposable like a toothpick and using greaseproof paper to carefully pipe it onto your surface.
Let the resin glue sit for 15-20 minutes to get tacky and fully settled on the surface, it should look smooth and shiny.
Make sure you have enough crystals for your chosen project, we have a crystal calculator on our website that can help you figure out the quantity needed for large projects.
For our NIKE AIRMAX we chose the Serinity Crystal AB Dream Mix for its variety of crystal sizes, plus it comes with a wholesale pack of each size, so it has both quantity and versatility.
Using a Wax Pen, start placing your Serinity flat back crystals; for this we used the scatter embellishment style because this method allows for how the section changes size and shape.
Whether you're doing scatter, honeycomb or straight lines, always start with the outside first because a messy edge is much easier to notice.
CG500 Resin Glue gives you several hours of work time and you should let it dry overnight.
