Swarovski is a household name and ever since Daniel Swarovski founded the crystals-cutting business in 1895, nestled between the Alps of Austria, the brand has become a symbol of quality and style. But what are Swarovski crystals?

What Are Swarovski Crystals

Swarovski crystals are made of high-quality lead-free glass, which has then been cut to such a high standard that it lives up to Daniel Swarovski’s original vision of “A diamond for everyone.” Before the cut-glass crystal was elevated to the standards we know today, if you wanted something that looked like a diamond you would have to find a real, natural, cut diamond; and these were rare and expensive and typically limited to upper echelons of society, like royalty and titans of industry.

The art of cut glass was already an established craft, especially in Bohemia (now the Czech Republic) and this niche specialty dates as far back as the 1500s. Daniel Swarovski came from this world, pioneered a new patented grinding process and set out to be the best crystal manufacturer in the business.

Swarovski Brand & Products

The Swarovski company spans various departments with differing specialties; under their brand you can find glass ornaments, finished jewellery pieces, individual crystals designed for embellishment, “Actives Crystals” for technology applications, high spec glass lenses for binoculars and more!

Swarovski products stand apart from the rest of the crystal market for several reasons, primarily it is their attention to detail and sheer dazzling quality, but it is also the power of their branding! Swarovski Crystals are as famous as Tiffany’s and Coca Cola thanks to their heavy involvement in some of histories highest grossing movies. Swarovski can be found in ‘Titanic’ (1997), ‘Moulin rouge’ (2001), ‘Phantom of The Opera’ (2004), ‘Beauty and the Beast’ (2017), ‘Breakfast at Tiffany’s’ (1961) and ‘Gentlemen Prefer Blondes’ (1953) to name a few. In other words, the glamorous leading lady in your favourite film is probably wearing Swarovski.

Change In Strategy

Swarovski fame turned to infamy in 2021 when decisions were made by executives in the company to limit who would be allowed to purchase and use their cut glass crystals going forward. This was an effort to re-vitalise their brand image as one of elite quality. Their products are still purchasable, but their loose crystals can only be purchased by established businesses that meet a strict criteria and will be putting them into finished products and not using them loose as part of a service.
