Upcycling is the New Shopping

At Bluestreak Crystals, we're all about creativity, and we simply love innovative ideas when it comes to upcycling. So what is upcycling and how can you do it? Upcycling is simply taking an old or barely used item and re-purposing it into a useful piece, usually with a few materials to help you. And if you can add Swarovski crystals into the mix, so much the better! Our crystals and Swarovski products are an excellent and easy way to help transform and re-purpose your old items. Take a look at some suggestions...

Let’s start small and easy. Take something as simple as a mint tin; a small rectangular one that opens on a hinge. You can upcycle this into a handy case – for your earphones, a mini travelling sewing kit, or for some small items of makeup or jewellery you want to carry around with you. And it can look adorable too. Cover the lid of the tin in our flatback hotfix Swarovski crystals. Our flatbacks come in a variety of shapes, but it’s a good idea to go for something that will tessellate and cover the whole area, like squares or rectangles. Alternatively, you could adorn your tin with our self-adhesive Swarovski chaton banding. A simple band of material already covered in tiny Swarovski crystals makes for a super-easy affix.

To take it a step up, you can re-purpose your old mason jars. Mason jars are incredibly useful for around the house, but if you want something pretty and cute rather than just something to hold your pasta, turn it into a candle holder. Take some old fabric about two inches wide, which will be added around the jar. To decorate, add some flatback hotfix crystals. Choose a mix of crystals – the effect is random, not patterned. Take some large, statement crystals, like our 3D flatback studs and some of our shaped Swarovskis in their largest sizes and place at random. Then fill in all the little gaps with our small, round flatback crystals in different colours, for an amazing, glittering effect to set off your candle.

If you’re looking for a fashion upcycle, take an old t-shirt (preferably plain and darker in colour) and cut out a strip of double thickness about two inches wide. Cut a long length and then measure around your wrist. Leave an extra 1.5 inches, then cut this length. With some of our Swarovski crystals, you can turn this into a rocky wristband! Add some velcro for it to secure around your wrist, then get decorating.

Simple fabric is great, because you can choose between our hotfix crystals and sew-on crystals. For a punk-rocky look, our 3D studs (in flatback) look fantastic. We also have lots of other shapes and types, like our pearl Cabochon, which look beautiful, especially set against a darker colour. Once you’ve added all the Swarovski shapes, fill in as many gaps as you can with our tiny flatback round crystals for extra sparkle.
