Go Back to Basics with Mother’s Day - Make her Something Beautiful with Swarovski Crystals!

With Christmas and the party season forgotten in a whirl of eating, drinking and hastily bought gifts, and January and February currently full of Valentine’s day anxiety, it’s easy to forget what’s really important. But with Mother’s Day coming up in early March, there's a chance to honour the person who raised and cared for you, and show her that you really appreciate her. Here, we take a look back at the the traditions of Mother’s Day and where they began, as well as some unique gifts to show your appreciation...

Mother’s Day can trace its roots back to 1908 in Grafton, West Virginia, USA, where Anna Jarvis held a memorial ceremony for her mother. She went on to campaign to have Mother’s Day made a recognised holiday in the USA. Anna Jarvis had been an activist who cared for troops on the battlefield in the American civil war, and she wanted to honour mothers because she believed they ‘did more for you than anyone in the world’.

By 1911 she had successfully campaigned to have this brought into effect across all the states, and in 1914 it was declared a national holiday. In 1920, Hallmark Cards began selling Mother’s Day cards, and other companies soon followed suit with gifts and cards of their own. Jarvis was critical of what she saw as the ‘commercialisation’ of Mother’s Day, and came out in favour of more handmade presents to show love and gratitude.

With this in mind, why not carry the torch of the true meaning of Mother’s Day, and get creative by making a unique gift from scratch? It’s easy to buy a card and flowers, but instead, you could do something really special. At Bluestreak, we sell a huge range of different craft materials, and single beads and crystals that you can use to make something that you simply can’t buy in shops.

Check out our huge range of different beads (including bicone, round and shaped) beautiful pearls, chatons and Swarovski fancy stones.
